Roland A. Hall was born on May 4, 1938 in Damascus, Georgia, to the late Johnnie Mangus Hall, Sr. and Inez Roberts.
He grew up in Damascus until age 14, when he moved to Newark, New Jersey.
Roland attended South Side High School before entering the United States Marine Corps, where he served until honorably discharged in 1956.
He was a trumpet player in the George Washington Carver Gay Blades Drum and Bugle Corps.
