John Philip Madden, son of the late Gallie Madden and Helen Pony Madden, and reared by the late Mary Marie Holmes, was born on April 25, 1951 at Princeton Hospital in Princeton, NJ. He is predeceased in death by his former wife Linda Darnell Madden, a sister Helen King, and brothers George Bernard Holmes and Larry Madden.
John was baptized at an early age at Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Princeton and was a former member for over 25 years. He assisted with the youth choir for a number of years.
John was a life long resident of Princeton, New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1969 where he is remembered as an outstanding athlete. He played basketball and football throughout high school as well as basketball for Joint Effort under the Princeton Recreation Department. John was also a member of Raymond Diester Holmes (Daddy Dee) Drum and Bugle Corp Troop 57 and a member of the Valiants Drill Team.
Many remember him as Ajax but to his closest family members he was known as Peaches. He was the driver for Opinion Research for 15 years and then went on to work at Macy’s followed by ETS. During the last several years he was employed by Jo Jo’s Steak House in Trenton, NJ. He also did landscaping and odd jobs in the Princeton/Trenton community.
He leaves to morn his loss a son, John Thompson, four daughters, Minyette Thompson, Ashante Thompson (Timothy), Ajisa Campbell (Anthony), Memphis Madden, two brothers Roger Madden (Tina), Charles Madden, two sisters Carolyn Liverman (Albert), Charline Madden Johnson, six grandchildren, Brandi Best, Ahmad Best, Tajah Best, Bryell Wheeler, Tyler Owens, Noah Campbell, a life long friend Cynthia Thompson, an aunt Mamie Barclay and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday 10AM at the Nassau Presbyterian Church 61 Nassau Street, Princeton. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 8 – 10AM. Services entrusted to Ledford Funeral Home 929 South Clinton Avenue, Trenton.
